Honfleur - picturesque port beloved by artists
Honfleur is still a working port - you can still buy your fish direct from the men who caught them - it is picture book pretty. What a photo opportunity! Cobbled streets, half timbered houses and working fishing boats.
World famous Honfleur is just a short drive from Le Gaudin
Centre of attraction is the Vieux Bassin - boats, quays and definitive buildings: tall, narrow, slate- fronted waterside houses.
Nearby, visit the church of Ste- Catherine (built by local ships' carpenters, entirely from wood, to celebrate the exodus of the English after the Hundred Years War. It stands apart from the massive oak belfry, now a museum.
Pont de Normandie
While you are there, you really must visit the Pont de Normandie. Well worth a photograph or two - a space-age bridgelinking Honfleur to Le Havre. For a time, it was the world's longest cable-stayed bridge.
And Honfleur has lots of restaurants to restore flagging spirits. A perfect day away from the 21st Century |
